Federation letter to about success of bhagidari with hawkers

After voluntary dismantling of stalls on problematic T-junction on main road and shifting to vacant site for community-centre (meant to have space for 110 informal units) to request cleaning, greening and securing of the roadside vacated and ensuring no hawking licenses are issued on it, 14/10/2001

Sub: Master Plan provisions for hawkers and efforts of hawkers in Vasant Kunj

Ref: Our letter dated 10th October

Dear Sir,

In continuation of our letter under reference, we are very pleased to inform you that consequent to the unprecedented partnership between the Federation and the Manch of hawkers here, we have been successful in more or less clearing a stretch of road near the Central Market in the middle of Vasant Kunj. The vegetable market that was located here posed a serious traffic nuisance, even hazard. In a remarkable and unprecedented effort the hawkers have dismantled their shops and shifted them under an interim arrangement to the site for Community Centre right behind, which is supposed to have space for hawkers under the statutory Master Plan. Only three shacks remain, mainly on account of the doubts created by local police by stopping instead of supporting the hawkers’ effort to vacate the roadside. We are hopeful that these will also move shortly.

We are writing to you to solicit your intervention in cleaning, greening and securing the site that the hawkers have voluntarily vacated so that it is protected from encroachments. If it becomes necessary, we will also request you to remove the three shacks that remain.

As mentioned in our letter under reference, it is learnt that some municipal inspectors have earmarked this roadside for issuing hawking licenses. We find this quite unnecessary considering there is adequate provision under the law for the same space to be inside the Community Centre, which both hawkers and residents find satisfactory. Accordingly, we would also like you to issue necessary instructions to ensure that no hawking licenses are issued in future on this site, which has been cleared through the participation of both bonafide stakeholders, viz, the hawkers and the residents.

We look forward to hearing from you in this matter at the earliest as we feel it is of the utmost importance that the cleared site be adequately attended to immediately.

Best regards
