Pioneer:
Sheila in quandary as PM wants rehab package for
farmers

Rajesh Kumar | New Delhi

Even as the Delhi Government continues with its grouse
over multiplicity of agencies leading to problem in
execution of various development projects, Prime
Minister Manmohan Singh has shot off a letter to Chief
Minister Sheila Dikshit asking her to give realistic
relief and rehabilitation package to farmers displaced
due to various infrastructure projects here.

Strangely, since the land acquisition and disposal
responsibility lies with the DDA, a Union Government
agency under Urban Development ministry, officials are
at a loss on how to react to this letter.

In the letter, Singh has pointed out that the terms
and conditions for land acquisition rate were not
sufficient and realistic.

The Prime Minister has advised the Delhi Government to
modify terms and conditions of land acquisition in the
Capital as he had received a large number of
presentations from farmers groups and Members of
Parliament (MPs) for better relief and rehabilitation
packages for former whose land acquired by the
Government for development purposes.

"The rehabilitation package for farmers should be
realistic and farmers should be rehabilitated in a
proper manner. If possible, involve farmers in the
developmental projects," the letter said.

Acting on the Prime Minister's advice, Chief Secretary
Ramesh Narainaswami has directed Divisional
Commissioner Narender Kumar to prepare a note on
relief and rehabilitation package for farmers whose
land is being acquired for developmental projects.

Sources said that the rate of land acquisition in
Delhi is between Rs 17.50 lakh and Rs 23 lakh for an
acre. The farmers have demanded that the Government
agencies acquire land at lowest rate while sale it to
private party at much higher prices
