*_Introduction_*
In the past fifty years, many countries all over the world,
including countries in the tropical belt, have been
developing very rapidly. Many cities in the tropical
countries such as Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Bangkok,
Rio de Janeiro etc have become modern cities which are
characterized by large scale of buildings with international
style. These buildings even though built in the tropics
mainly adopted design concept that use advanced building
technologies, imported materials, and even the way of
building and ‘living’ which is more appropriate for the
temperate climate.
These high-speed urban developments with high-density urban
agglomerations in many cities are on the increase, but one
thing that remains relatively unchanged is the tropical
conditions of climate and natural environment. On the other
side, there is also a vast collection of traditional
sustainable built environments intertwined with diverse
local cultures.
Are the present urban developments in harmony with the
tropical conditions?Do they give sufficient attention to the
diverse local cultural traditions and lifestyles of the
people in the tropics?
Do they consider the natural settings and cultural habits
for the achievement of more sustainable development?
What design strategies are appropriate for tropical
high-density city living of many rapidly growing cities that
meet local climate and social cultural needs?
Do adopted technologies and design typologies contradict the
local traditional lifestyles and values?
Do the expressions and aesthetics of imported designs change
the unique characters of many tropical cities?
_*Aims and Scope*_
The INTA 2^nd conference aims to provide an international
forum for researchers, architects, building practitioners
and students in the tropical belts to share and to
communicate with one another, because of the shared climatic
problems, experiences and opportunities in dealing with the
tropical context. It is expected that various research and
practice solutions can be shared and discussed for further
improvements of the environmental, social and cultural
sustainability in the tropical regions. The proposed theme
for this conference on Sustainable Architecture and Urban
Design in Tropical Regions is: */Harmony in Culture and
Nature/** ** ***
