Protests against Commonwealth Games site
Saturday, July 8, 2006 (New Delhi):

The area proposed for the Commonwealth Games village in New Delhi is
under a cloud of protests.

Environmentalists and urban planners are concerned because they say the
16-hectare site for the village is on a faultline and the area is
seismically unstable.
"All scientific documents that have been in the public domain say it's a
seismic zone, it's on the floodplain which makes it vulnerable to
flooding. There are a lot of birds and aquatic life, it's an
ecologically fragile zone," said Vimlendu Jha, Founder, We For Yamuna.

"Also there will be problems in terms of construction. The soil has high
amounts of water in it. The bearing capacity is very low, the foundation
of the building will have to be very deep and very expensive," said Prof
K T Ravindran, Urban Designer, School of Planning & Architecture.
