If Frank Gehry Designed Dresses...

2006_01_arts_archfashion.jpgLast week a new exhibit kicked off at The
Center for Architecture. It isn't about buildings or bridges, however,
it's about dresses and jackets and blouses (oh my!). The Fashion of
Architecture delves in to the world of couture. Yes, clothes are being
structured after achitecture, but did you know that architecture is
stealing looks from the runway? Oh how we love it when fashion meets form.

So come check out how pliable metals, membrane structures, lightweight
glasses, flexible plastics and other things we don't know about are
inspiring designers. In addition see how draping and pleating is
entering the world of architecture. Of course, this must have been
spurred on by fashion week, which takes over the city in February. As
for the exhibit, it runs through March 11, 2006 at a number of galleries
(check the site for details).

Works by practitioners such as Zaha Hadid, Winka Dubbeldam, Shigeru Ban,
Kivi Sotamaa, David Adjaye, Block Architecture, 6a Architects, Lars
Spuybroek, Stuart Veech and Meejin Yoon are showcased alongside
architectonic apparel from fashion mavericks such as Martin Margiela,
Hussein Chalayan, Yoshiki Hishinuma, Yeohlee, Pia Myrvold, Yohji
Yamamoto, Boudicca, Eley Kishimoto, Kei Kagami, Michiko Koshino,
Stéphanie Coudert, Simon Thorogood, Nicola de Main, and Arkadius. The
exhibition features a special installation from Paris-based artist Lucy
Orta.
