Two house collapses, mere days apart, have raised questions about the
functioning of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). The incidents
have not only highlighted the very real possibility that MCD officials
played a large role, along with the police, in allowing such structures
to come up, but also focused on the sad lack of quality control.

According to standing committee chairman Vijender Gupta, most of the
illegal constructions in the city were in village abadi areas and
unauthorised colonies where no building bylaws applied. And MCD still
has no idea about the extent of the problem as no survey has ever been
done.
