The Bombay high court on Saturday upheld a University of Mumbai decision
to remove Rajan Lakule from the post of the principal of Sir JJ Scho
ol of Architecture.

A division bench of Justices F I Rebello and Ashutosh Kumbhakoni also
rejected Lakule's plea to stay the verdict.

A committee headed by retired HC judge D G Deshpande had filed a report
listing the irregularities in Lakule's appointment, which had formed the
basis of the vice-chancellor's decision to remove him, the university
counsel, advocate Rui Rodrigues, said.

Lakule had been appointed as the principal of the college in June 2004.
However, controversy followed his appointment after it was alleged that
he had obtained an online doctorate from the Ashwood University in 2003.

According to the rules laid down by the university, only those with PhD
and five years experience as a professor could hold the position of a
principal. The committee headed by Deshpande had found that Lakule
obtained the Phd degree online.

In September, the university vice-chancellor accepted the report and
revoked Lakules appointment.
