BANGALORE: A vital green space to beat the city centre rush, topped with
a slice of history. On offer is a unique experience, as the BBMP gets
ready to open the long-in-the-wait Freedom Park to the public in
November, this year.

The 20-acre park, coming up in the former central prison premises on
Seshadri Road, has had a long drawn record, ever since plans for the
park were finalized as early as in 2002. According to the BBMP
officials, delays in awarding contracts have been a key reason for the
slackened pace of progress. With the run-up to the launch gathering
steam, it's time to look ahead.

===============

BANGALORE’S OLD Central Jail is surprisingly busy for a prison that has
been defunct for five years. Small, white structures have sprouted over
the 27 acres of land as it is slowly being transformed into an urban
park. Unlike Bangalore’s better-known parks, the focus at Freedom Park
is not on lavish displays of flowers or bushes trimmed to resemble
elephants. The park will eventually house a gallery, coffee shop and an
amphitheatre. It will have guided walks for the heritage- inclined. It
will offer wi-fi access if you want to work on your laptop while you
watch your toddler run on the grass. When it is finished, the former
prison will be a green space unlike any other in Bangalore.

In this project as in others, Mathew and Ghosh Architects (MGA), winners
of the national competition to design Freedom Park, are displaying
patience and unerring taste. Two of the most accomplished architects in
the country, 39-year-old Nisha Mathew and 41-year-old Soumitro Ghosh
graduated from the School of Architecture, CEPT in Ahmedabad. They have
been designing buildings for the last 12 years — a short span in the
life of an architect. Their body of work is modest but their style is
distinctive in everything they have built: from their home to
Basavangudi police station to Bethel Baptist church to Bangalore’s new
Max Mueller Bhavan. In every year of the firm’s existence, they have won
awards everywhere from China to Portugal (including the Cityscape and
Architectural Review Awards 2007 in Dubai and the Chicago Athenaeum
International Architecture Award for the Bhopal Gas Tragedy Memorial
Competition), but their work has been almost entirely in Bangalore.
