NEW DELHI: Over two dozen heritage monuments and buildings, a recently amended archaeological act and  the need for a public transport vis-à-vis Delhi metro. What will the government choose?
The question assumes importance after the recent announcement by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) about its proposed Central Secretariat-Kashmere Gate line.

The proposed line runs along a route that showcases more than two dozen-odd heritage monuments under the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) and buildings including the World Heritage Site of Red Fort. The amendment in the archaeology law in March 2010, which bans any construction near protected heritage monuments, is likely to spark the heritage versus development debate once again.

BANGALORE: THE picturesque Ambedkar Veedhi with heritage and landmark buildings like the Vidhana Soudha, High Court and the General Post Office (GPO) has a new civic problem to deal with. The mess caused by the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited's (BMRCL) underground Namma Metro Project is no longer the only problem that motorists and pedestrians have to face.  The new entrant to the list is the footpath railing that has fallen over the pavement forcing the pedestrians to walk on the busy road near the Krishna Rajendra Circle.

MADRAS/CHENNAI: Several questions are being asked these days about the hurriedly-conceived plans for the Metro Rail. But what concerns this column are the apprehensions expressed by INTACH Chennai about the possible threat it poses to heritage buildings on a stretch of Mount Road, or Anna Salai if you will.

Some months earlier, some of the senior parishoners of St. Andrew's Kirk had met the Metro Rail authorities and had pointed out that Metro Rail's Poonamallee High Road line posed a threat to the unique well foundations of the Church.

The authorities showed appreciation of the situation and had IIT Madras engineers look at the problem and graciously accepted their advice to choose a less-threatening alignment 100m away.
