MCD-Aga Khan deal for Walled City in the offing?
http://mail.architexturez.net/%2B/MPISG-Media/archive/msg00637.shtml

Key component of this is removal of hawkers and making plazas and kiosks
for them. This is not open to MCD except through vending committee under
national policy that it has duly adopted. It is noteworthy that illegal
hawker project with respectable NGO Manushi that is giving MCD corrupt
image a makeover, was properly respected in IIT TRIPP funded Sajha-Munch
book of 2003 and Pradeep Sachdeva is architect associated with IIT TRIPP
which has also been designing road sections to fit hawkers, serving in
common cause with Manushi to spare retail space planned for them in DMP
for other uses, including now fdi, which, of course, Sanjha-Munch types
oppose in principle.

[swing] Outsourcing Heritage (Red Fort PIL comes to roost!)
http://mail.architexturez.net/%2B/MPISG-Media/archive/msg00843.shtml

NEW DELHI: It will be a year that will usher in a big change for
heritage in the Capital. With the decks being cleared to draw up
conservation plans for the Red Fort, Safdarjung Tomb as well as Jama
Masjid, the three major landmark in the city will now gear up for
a face-lift but from 'non-government' hands. Waiting for clearance from
the finance department of the Ministry of Culture, the tender for Red
Fort will mark the beginning of this shift of involving experts from
outside. While the decision to hire experts to draw up the conservation
plan for Red Fort might not have been completely rested with ASI as it
had been directed by the Supreme Court to hand over conservation of the
Fort to outside experts following a public interest litigation, but it
seems to be following the precedent established by the case for other
monuments.

Re: Jama Masjid: Stripped Bare by Her Bachelors, Even [ cons ]

He said that a large number of constructions that have come up within
the compound of the mosque will have to be removed.

In his presentation, architect Pradeep Sachdeva said even the roof of
the Meena Bazaar and the structures around it will have to go so that
one gets a clear view of the mosque from all sides.

The tyre market, auto spare parts market and junk dealers behind the
mosque will have to be shifted and the outer facades of the surrounding
buildings restored to provide the right foil for the mosque.
