Govt allowed us to develop land and raise money, says Metro, but MCD won’t listen

New Delhi, August 2: The face-off between Delhi Metro Railway Corporation (DMRC) and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) that has left 75 acres of prime property across the capital idle and developers stranded, comes after a series of Government orders that, DMRC officials say, clearly gave them the mandate that the MCD is objecting to.

The DMRC’s stand is also vindicated by the 2006 National Urban Policy report which allows mass-rapid transport systems — like the Metro — to “commercially exploit land and air rights over the land used for transport infrastructure” for additional resources. Still, MCD shot off notices to DMRC last year for carrying out commercial development at its stations at Inderlok and Shastri Nagar on Line 1 (Rithala-Shahdara) without getting building plans sanctioned.
