View of the Commonwealth Tile Factory, Jeppu, Mangalore

The backwater condition of Mangalore is a microcosm of the broader condition of the Malabar Coast: two rivers meet before emptying into the Arabian Sea. The Commonwealth Tile Factory sits on the north bank of the Netravati River. During the peak of the Tile Industry this river would have provided both the source of clay and artery for maritime trade of Mangalore tiles, which were exported by sailing ships as far afield as East Africa, Yemen, Aden, Basra, Sumatra, British Borneo and Australia.
