With the Asian Games of 1982, the city went into a building frenzy that also lifted the economic climate for the country. At a scale much grander than the 1951 games held here, impressive new structures were proposed that would change the very structure of the city.

Any architectural design philosophy for a stadium must be founded a clear structural concept. The task to house and move thousands of people and manage services for them supercedes any notion of beauty. However, as Buckminster Fuller wrote, "When I am working on a problem, I never think about beauty but when I have finished, if the solution is not beautiful, I know it is wrong", the solution had to be an elegant one. The structure of the stadium is a simple geodesic structure with skylights for light and ventilation. An elaborate movement pattern and ways of subdividing the interior space was devised that would allow multiple sports to be played at once.
