The Centre for English, Translation and Anglo-Portuguese Studies (CETAPS) of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities of the New University of Lisbon will organise the interdisciplinaryInternational Conference Arch&Lit: Inter-Arts Dialogue(s), in Lisbon (27-28 November 2014).

Working languages: Portuguese, English, Spanish. No translation will be provided.

We will privilege comparative and transdisciplinary approaches.Potential contributors are invited to submit a 300 word abstract on themes related to any of the following conference tracks:

  • Architecture & Literature;
  • Inter-Arts dialogues and poetics-policies of space;
  • Ecocriticism;
  • Architectural culture;
  • Land/Sound/Smell/City/Bridge/StreetSCAPES;
  • Human embodiment (architecture, gender, body) and Literary Studies;
  • Spatial, Urban and Architectural Theory;
  • Architectural Humanities;
  • Architectural hermeneutics;
  • Regionalism(s);
  • Identity Studies;
  • Styles, structures, textures, images, narratives, symbolic forms, and images: the dialogue between architecture and art;
  • Travel Writing, literary places/spaces, and time;
  • Literary and visual representations of technological and architectural elements/spaces;
  • Negotiating spaces and buildings;
  • The interrelations between literary characters and real/imaginary architectural structures and spaces;
  • Architecture and Film Studies;
  • Pacing and tension: the structures of literary texts (Literary Architecture);
  • Architecture, literature and art as forms of (performing) individual and collective memory;
  • Utopian and Dystopian Spaces;
  • Gothic architecture and literature;
  • Theories of the Everyday;
  • Built environments in literature and in the Visual Arts;
  • Archaeology, architecture and literature: ruins, abandoned/obsolete places and other ‘places of memory’;
  • Literary and Architectural (Post)Modernisms;
  • Non-places;
  • Narrating colonial and postcolonial spaces/structures;
  • Cultural and Psychogeography;
  • Libraries, archives, bookstores, book fairs and other spaces for/in books.

Papers and panels on the above themes are invited. However, papers/panels on other subjects related to the above topics will also be considered. Participants will be held to a twenty minute presentation limit.
