A war memorial, paying tribute to the Mukti Bahini freedom fighters and the Indian armed forces who laid down their lives for the liberation of Bangladesh, will be ready by December. The memorial, in Dhaka, is under construction and the foundation stone was laid by Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Speaking about the memorial, Mr A.K.Mozammel Huq, Bangladesh’s liberation war affairs minister, said that the names of every Indian armed forces and Mukti Bahini soldier who sacrificed his life will be engraved on the monument. Huq, who was introduced as the first Bangladeshi to attack the Pakistan Army during the 1971 war, said India had supported the Bangladeshi people in 1971, housing lakhs of people in 826 refugee camps and providing training and weaponry to the Mukti Bahini. This led to the “shameless” surrender of the Pakistan Army in December 1971.
