In current usage, the term “Bali Style” signifies a surprising diversity of things. Initially limited to descriptions of the bungalow-or villa-type resort dwellings pioneered in Bali in the second half of the twentieth century, it is now ubiquitous throughout Southeast Asia. Today the term extends to a much wider spectrum of design products and experiences that embody a shared aspiration for luxurious and leisurely tropical lifestyles, but which have jumped species from the substantive architectures of residential and corporate developments to the decorative ephemera of themed social functions and community events.
