This chapter analyses the early accounts of Sahajanand Swami’s motivations and iconographic directives for first installing the highly unusual, and in many ways unprecedented, Nar–Narayana images at the Kalupur temple. The Kalupur temple in Ahmedabad was consecrated by Bhagwan Swaminarayan on Monday, 24 February 1822, and dedicated to the Vaishnavite dual divinities Nar–Narayan. This temple is still an active worship and pilgrimage destination, and its claim to authenticity rests on its maintaining its historical connections to its founder. The author examines the relationship between art and architecture and philosophical doctrine during the community’s formative years.
