The present publication assembles the papers of a Franco-Indian conference held at the French Institute of Pondicherry on 10th August 1990 in the frame-work of the initial phase of the programme entitled ”Urban configurations and commercial networks in South India”. In the six presentations contained in this book, the researchers responsible for launching the programme first present the problematic of their earlier work and its relevance with regard to the joint project. Next they focus on a few outstanding aspects of the socio-economic development of Tiruchengodu as reflected by an analysis of the life-stories of the new agents of economic development; the study of the cotton industry and its evolution in terms of national and international networking and lastly, the redefined contemporary urban space.
Ce numéro rassemble les communications prononcées lors d’une rencontre franco-indienne qui s’est tenue à Pondichéry le 10 août 1990, dans la phase initiale du programme «Configurations urbaines et réseaux marchands en Inde du Sud» de l’lnstitut Français. Dans les six communications ici présentées, les chercheurs qui ont lancé le programme exposent la problématique de leurs travaux antérieurs et leur pertinence pour le projet commun, puis focalisent sur quelques aspects spectaculaires du développement socio-économique de Tiruchengodu tel que le révèlent l’analyse des histoires de vie des nouveaux agents économiques, l’étude de la filière du coton et de son évolution en relation aux réseaux nationaux et internationaux, et enfin l’examen de la redéfinition contemporaine de l’espace urbain.
