CHANDIGARH: The decks are now clear to bring back the entire assembly building to its original shape to maintain the heritage status. The Punjab speaker, following a detailed discussion, has given his nod to the Chandigarh Administration for the project in recently- held meeting with the authority. The entre exercise to prepare the tender document and advertising will take atleast two months.

Significantly, soon after the consent, the UT administration has set the ball rolling. "A Mumbai-based private architect has been asked to prepare plan for the restoration of the Punjab assembly building and she has started working on the project. After the preparation of the architecture plan, we will advertise the tender for the restoration work to hire the private agency to initiate the works", said a senior official of the UT.

The restoration is crucial, as the UT administration was trying to persuade the Punjab government to restore the Le Corbusier-designed building after getting UNESCO's heritage status last year.

Under the project, what in store are- removal of the current granite flooring of the assembly and restoring it with concrete, the air condition and its ducks, glittery and colourful lighting installed in the assembly hall, among others. Moreover, the existing paintings would have to be relocated in a separate area and the toilets need to be brought to their original shape by removing the existing ones. The removal of change made in the doors is also one of the key works in the plan.
