Panaji: The Charles Correa Foundation said it is grateful to the high court of Bombay at Goa, people of the state and the architectural community around the world for their support in protecting Kala Academy, the only public building in the capital city designed by noted architect Charles Correa.

“We believe this is the first time a modern building has been saved from demolition by a court judgement. We are grateful to the people of Goa and the architectural community around the world, for their support in protecting the building,” the foundation stated.

The Kala Academy is an important building, an exemplary modern public building, and one of the first contemporary post-Liberation buildings in Goa, the foundation said. “We believe that the court respected the integrity of this unique design and made sure it is not destroyed.”

In the many discussions and debates over past two years it was clearly established that the people of Goa appreciated the design, spaciousness of the public spaces and their easy access, making it an important cultural artefact for the city, the foundation stated.
