We would sure like a summary of the discussion here, should somebody bother to attend. Quite frankly, very surprised if not offended at the sweeping generalizations and simplifications made in this AIA show, and the motivations behind "exploring  how the energy of citizens “making-do” is translated by architects, urban planners, and governmental and nongovernmental entities" - as, IF.

This panel addresses contemporary architecture in 21st-century Indian cities in the context of existing vernacular and historic context.

Welcome: Margaret Castillo, AIA, President AIA New York Chapter
Introductions: Umberto Dindo, AIA, Secretary AIA New York Chapter

Program:
Christopher Benninger, one of India’s most highly decorated and sought after architects, will expand on his influential “Principles of Intelligent Urbanism” that provided an alternative to a new generation of urban planners and architects who feel the fatigue of imported ideas impaled on the landscapes of India. His planning work and design that ranges from Sri Lanka, across India to Bhutan, where he has prepared the capital plan and the urban design for the National Capitol Complex will illustrate his presentation.

Arjun Appadurai, the eminent social anthropologist from NYU, will remind everyone, particularly architects, that all planning affects human beings (Indians in this symposium), their heritage, culture, livelihood, aspirations, and destiny and what needs to be learned and respected for the healthy future of Indian cities.

Kenneth Frampton, Associate AIA, Professor of Architecture at Columbia University, who’s influential essay “Towards a  Critical Regionalism" may frame his talk as Respondent.

Victoria Marshall, Assistant Professor of Urban Design at Parsons the New School for Design, and an India China Institute Fellow 2010-2012, will moderate the ensuing panel discussion and Q/A.
