A day before a UNESCO official inspects Ramappa temple for the World Heritage Site tag, authorities said they were working against time amid heavy rain. Local officials said that they could not walk across many areas after the downpour, because their feet kept getting caught in the sludge.

Work on the site began a few months ago,1 when officials from Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) were informed of the site being the main contender for World Heritage Site tag in 2020.

While the main temple is in good condition, other structures, including the Kameshwarayya temple, needs to be reconstructed. The cost estimate is between Rs 3 crore and Rs 4 crore.

Taking hurried steps could cause more damage to the site than good,” said an ASI official on condition of anonymity. “Sanctions for work came in late. When Nalanda was in contention for the tag, six years went into its preparation,” added the official.
