The Jugaad Project has an open CFP on "Work"!

What does ‘work’ mean, make and do in different contexts? Why are some activities more easily perceived as ‘work’ while others are not? What are the conditions under which some forms of work are elevated while others are invisibilized? As a noun, work is associated with effort, labor, occupation, and achievement while, as a verb, it suggests the process of operating, forming and cultivating something. Work’s connection to making and building things as objects, images, actions, environments, governments, is an integral part of cultural variance and social (re)production. If you are a scholar, artist, activist, and/or self-identified ‘worker’ interested in themes of praxis, embodiment, and materiality, The Jugaad Project (TJP) team would like to hear from you.

Acceptance/rejection notices will be sent by August 15, 2023. We are a women-led, volunteer-run editing group, and if we do not accept your proposal we will try to suggest an alternative venue for publication.

GUIDING QUESTIONS;

  • *What constitutes ‘work’ for people of different genders, ages, races, cultures, and how/why? Why does the value of an activity/form of work often undergo a change in value and association when it moves from the domestic to the public domain?
  • *How does ‘work’ relate to modern notions of leisure? What do ideas such as work-life balance and invisible work indicate about our current social concerns about work?
  • *How can the domain of the religious be connected with work? What happens when religious and work times and spaces get intertwined or disconnected?
  • *What is the relation between analog and digital forms of work? Does the increased use of virtual and cognitive skills in modes of production alter our understanding of labor and materiality?
  • *How is the relationship between ‘work’ and ‘occupation’ identified today with the increase of ‘location-independent’ jobs? How do Digital Nomads redefine work, occupation and jobs?
  • *How do technologies like Chat GPT affect scholars’, academics’, artists’ working practices  and identities?

ABOUT US: The Jugaad Project is a dynamic digital platform for exciting, cutting-edge research on materiality, embodiment, and belief in an open-access forum by artists and scholars. Our volunteer, women-led team is dedicated, knowledgeable, and aims at scholarly rigor as well as dialog.
