KOLKATA: The Mamata Banerjee government's plan to merge the century-old Kolkata Improvement Trust (KIT) and the two and a half decade old Kolkata Metropolitan Water and sanitation Authority (KMWSA) with the Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA) is finally going to be a reality.

According to sources from the state secretariat, the KIT and KMWSA Act is going to be repealed and the amended Town and Country planning bill is most likely going to be placed at the state assembly this current session, following which the three organisations of KMDA, KIT and KMWSA will come under one umbrella, falling under the state urban development department.

Government officials said that the aim is to bring the three urban development agencies under one umbrella for better administrative functioning and coordination. The matter was recently discussed in an administrative meeting.

"Presently, the executive board of the three agencies are common which is under the KMDA board, but KIT and KMWSA still has separate legislative Acts. Once the bill is passed, the three agencies will come under one Act," said a government official
